The year was 1916. World War I was raging in Europe, and the political climate in the United States was definitely guarded. It was the perfect opportunity to issue a coin that, as a contemporary government report would put it, "was intended to typify in a measure the awakening interest of the country to its own protection"The Standing Liberty quarters were minted from 1916 to 1930 in 90% silver. There are two major design varieties of these elusive quarters. Type one was issued for only two years, as there was quite an uproar about Miss Liberty´s "bare breast". In 1917, it was replaced byType two in which the design was modified, covering the breast. On both, Liberty´s left arm is raised to display a sheild signifying protection and her right hand bears the Olive Branch of peace. Designed by Hermon A. McNeil, these exceptionally scarce coins are minted in 90% silver. Many were melted down during the great surge of 1980 when the price of silver hit 50$ per ounce.
