The image of a dragon coils across the surface of this jewelry box. In Balinese culture, the dragon symbolizes safety, protection, shelter, and clothing. Working in crocodile wood, Gusti Ngurah Semarajaya sculpts the piece in the shape of a monkey and paints the features with great realism. Honored for their role in saving Sita in the Ramayana, monkeys are beloved creatures in Balinese society. Although they sometimes disrupt temple ceremonies with their antics, monkeys are welcomed for they are regarded as sacred.
